Highest bid ever for a classic car at auction

A rare 1962 red Ferrari 250 GTO became the most expensive classic car ever sold at auction as when caught a record breaking bid of $48.4 million in Monterey , California on Saturday. The vehicle was offered by RM Sotheby.

The Red Coupe is one of the limited 36 Ferraris that were made, each a little exclusive. This rare 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO was purchased by former Microsoft executive Greg Whitten in 2000. The bidder’s name has been kept anonymous.

It has an extraordinary racing lineage, with a national championship and several major wins under its seatbelts. Exceptionally, unlike most racing cars, it has never been wrecked and repaired. All 36 of the 250 GTOs ever made are still running and their ownership has created a very private club. Ferrari 250 owners know one another and sometimes get together for road rallies.

The price achieved by the car is over $10 million more than the previous auction record holding 250 GTO, sold by Bonhams in 2014.Β Regardless, whoever wrapped the winning bid has joined an elite group of people lucky enough to say they own one of, if not the most exceptional car ever built.
